Every year, over 500 students from all over the Commonwealth apply for admission to the Governor's School. Of these, 90 students are selected to attend. These students are top academic achievers at their schools, and many have attained combined SAT scores in excess of 1400. All students who are selected for admission to the PGSS receive a stipend from the Commonwealth which pays for their tuition, room, and board at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

While attending the Governor's School, all students live on campus in a CMU dormitory and take specially designed courses, participate in laboratory research, and engage in team research projects.
