The academic activities for the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences include core courses, elective courses, laboratory courses, team research projects, and seminars and field trips.
The core courses are required of all students and provide a common educational experience. You may drop one of the core courses after the second week. However, you must be taking at least one elective course in order to drop a core course. The elective courses may be chosen according to your interest. It is not required that the student take any elective course; however, since you may want to drop one of the core courses, you should take at least one elective from the start of the program. You may choose as many elective courses as you want initially (schedule permitting) and then drop those of lesser interest at a later time. Elective courses may be dropped up to the last day of classes. Laboratory courses are offered in biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science. It is suggested that the student enroll and complete the laboratory course in the same area of science that is selected for the team project. Thus, if you wish to work on a biology team project it is desirable that you also complete the biology laboratory. This is not a requirement (except in chemistry), however, and different combinations of lab course and team project are possible upon consultation with the instructors. Those students choosing mathematics team projects may choose any of the four laboratory courses in which to participate. It is required that you select one.
