General Information
The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS) first opened
at Carnegie Mellon University in the summer
of 1982. This rigorous five-week summer program was established to provide
talented Pennsylvania high school students with enrichment experiences in
the sciences and mathematics and to encourage them to pursue careers in
science and technology. Every year, hundreds of students from all over the
Commonwealth apply for admission to the Governor's School. Of these, 90
students are chosen to attend. These students are top academic achievers
at their schools, and many have attained combined SAT scores in excess of
1400. All students who are selected for admission to the PGSS receive a
stipend from the Commonwealth which pays for their tuition, room, and board
at Carnegie Mellon.
While attending the Governor's School, all students live on campus in a
Carnegie Mellon dormitory and take specially designed lecture
courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics.
In addition, students are expected to participate in laboratory
courses of their own choosing in biology, chemistry, physics, or computer
science and to engage in team research projects
in one of the five major discipline areas. Finally, they also have opportunities
to take elective courses, go on field trips,
attend guest lectures and participate in seminars on college selection.
This is the first year that the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences
has published information about its programs and its students on the World
Wide Web. Throughout the month of July, PGSS students will continually be
adding new information about themselves and their research projects to the
documents listed below. The students
and staff of the Governor's School, encourage
you to browse through our pages so that you can meet us and become acquainted
with the exciting work we are doing!
