Ahhh, the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences. Well, if you're curious to what it's all about, I'll explain:

Basically, it's a 5-week government-sponsored program where we get a chance to taste 5 disciplines of sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, Computer Science). Even better yet (heehee), we get to focus on one or two disciplines through labs and most importantly, Team Projects (see Hnefatafl for my little baby). Course descriptions are available here.

Here's a whiff of what we're exposed to:

Biology [Peter Berget]
We're learning the ins and outs of prokaryotic molecular biology (a la regulation of genetic expression in bacteria) while listening to Professor Berget's hilarious stand-up. We've learned about various mechanisms which regulate both the transcription and translation aspects of genetic expression, yummy. Check out our course notes.

Chemistry [Mark Farrell]
Learn the Aldol Condensation, Grignard Reagants, and much much more! Oh my god! We're learning organic chemistry and all about buckyball-professors with really big ears (don't ask).

Computer Science [~cburch (, the legendary)]
Sort of an exposure to a big part of the whole gamut of Computer Science, with java. We've touched on everything from raytracing to encryption to the Big-O (good french fries). Check out the course page.

Discreet Math [Doug Ensley ("a bum")]
We're learning discreet math through Professor Ensley's guidance; he teaches us new and provocative ways of looking at funny math problems. Graph theory, combinatorics, probability, chocolate, it's all good. Check out the course page.

Modern Physics [Richard Holman]
Oh shucks, the daunting task of learning relativity, doesn't that make your day? Heh, throw that in with Professor Holman's guilt-free "relatively" simple (in his frame of reference) homework and you can guarantee that the time you spend doing your homework will dialate...
